OBEY IN MIAMI PART -1

Took the redeye out Sunday night to Miami with Shepard and the crew and its been pretty much non stop. I’ve only been out here for Art Basel about 6 years ago and barely remember anything, but fancy cars, long legs, and dudes in white pants and pink shirts. haha. Mike O’Meally: 25 Years of Skate Photography at the House of Vans London

There probably isn’t a more suitable venue to showcase Mike O’Meally’s documentation of the last 25 years of skateboarding; an underground venue for an underground subculture. It juxtaposes from the last time we were at the House of Vans London when Covert to Overt, photography of OBEY Giant by Jon Furlong, held a mix of fervent excitement, activity and a smattering of grime and live MCs; this couldn’t have had more of a different vibe.

An Evening with All-Vinyl Record Label Grade 10

Something that you notice about Grade 10 is that they are far more than just eight musicians. It’s immediately obvious that the components of the collective are more of a band of brothers; figuratively, metaphorically and quite literally. Comprised of Kollaps, Forever, Prayer, 8Ball, Unslaved, Classic Coke, Loosewomen and Nokia Boys the label and collective are made up of friends and family with its roots firmly based, but not exclusively sourced from, Leicester’s very unique and bustling music scene.

IDIOCRACY Screening in Echo Park- #MakeAmericaSmartAgain

Over the the weekend, the OBEY Crew headed out to Echo Park for a special screening of cult comedy “Idiocracy”, put on by #MakeAmericaSmartAgain and Eat|See|Hear. Make America Smart Again is an initiative started by Shepard and Amanda Fairey that aims to combat apathy and empower people to participate in the political process and go out and vote.

“I’m incredibly honored to create art with Bad Brains and to be connected to a band that has provided so much inspiration, energy, and sheer pleasure for me over the years. Kyle Platts: London illustrator studio visit

Kyle Platts is a freelance artist and illustrator based in London. I spent the afternoon with Kyle at his home studio in Peckham. He is influenced by anthropology, hot rods, nature, bad skin and psychedelia (although he does not smoke weed). He mostly works with fine nib Rotring pens, but also enjoys using pencils, paint and computers (illustrator, photoshop and whatnot). I’ve been a fan of Kyle’s work for a while, I really enjoy his take on modern city life, through humor and in the medium of comics. Kyle has been commissioned by many companies for his engaging imagery and story telling. Just a few of the clientele include: Converse, The New York Times, MTV, Lazy Oaf and many more. Kyle’s comics have always made me literally laugh out loud, for example the image below ‘I’m Smoking For Two Now’. I loved looking through Kyle’s sketchbooks when I visited his studio, it was exciting to see the work process. Photos of Kyle’s sketchbooks are featured below.
