Obey Paris by Viktor Vauthier

According to Vauthier, his original ambition in life was to be an artist and a documentarian. “Before being a photographer, I wanted to be an artist only. I was like, “I’m gonna paint, I’m gonna do anything. I was like, ‘I’m gonna try things, I’m gonna do things.’ Through these years — thanks to my dad — I had this camera. I was taking photos, trying to be an artist. I actually didn’t realize it was an art and maybe that was the art that I should do.”

The optic white walls were filled with hundreds of red dots that seemed to play tricks on my eyes. I visited the Marciano Foundation in LA and had the pleasure to view the 2011 work of Yoyoi Kasumas, if you missed her previous LACMA show, be sure to take a trip to her ongoing exhibit. The spontaneous work of Olafur Eliasson: Reality projector was visually stimulating as well, with colorful lights accompanied with powerful background sounds.

Obey Giant (Sacramento Recap)

“If you’ve been following updates this week, you know that I’m in Sacramento for Wide Open Walls. The crew and I just completed my 15-story Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison mural, which is my largest in the state of California and my most technically ambitious mural ever. The art is based on a photo by Jim Marshall which I used originally as part of my American Civics series. I’m grateful to be able to create this image on such a large scale as a tribute for the 50th anniversary of Cash’s Live at Folsom Prison album, and I hope that this art will ignite a conversation around the need for incarceration reform. According to a recent in-depth study by the Prison Policy Initiative, America has the highest incarceration rate in the world with a shocking 2.3 million people currently imprisoned.

BEYOND THE STREETS is arguably the most ambitious survey of street art and graffiti ever put together. It’s cool to genuinely work with partners who I support and support me.
