J DILLA 2009 ARCHIVE by Shepard Fairey

I created this print back in 2009 in memory of J Dilla, in collaboration with B+. Jay Dee was an incredible hip-hop producer and his impact is pervasive to this day. I love a lot of Dilla’s production for A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Busta Rhymes, but my favorite jam is the Pharcyde's “Runnin” because the song gets people movin’ using unexpected jazzy and folky samples coupled with a killer drum beat! The infectious end result uses ingredients most would have considered having little or no “shake your rump” potential. Join me as we celebrate and honor Dilla’s music and his legacy all month long. BEAU STANTON’S AVA GARDNER MURAL

If Beau Stanton’s Ava Gardner mural is removed from the Robert F. Kennedy school I have chosen to insist that my portrait mural of Robert F. Kennedy be removed also. Not only do I stand with Beau and believe that his beautiful and benevolent mural has nothing to do with the Japanese battle flag, I also believe that the action to remove his mural is a disservice to the man the school is named for and whose philosophies certainly diverge from censorship and intolerance as a course of action. I sympathize with all victims of injustice, including Koreans who suffered at the hands of the Japanese, but perpetrating another injustice by removing Beau Stanton’s mural based on false claims that it represents the Japanese battle flag where no such connection exists, is foolish and selfish.

Benson Edles aka Dirty Merlin founder of the Long Beach, CA natives GRN+GLD west coast garage beats, spells and lies. Dirty Merlin has made a name for himself not just because of his talent, Coachella 2018 alumni or placing 2nd at Beat Cinema's Beat Battle but because of what he's done for the community of Orange County and City of Long Beach. His good taste of music has shown through out the years of their residency at a local bar Que Sera Long Beach, every 2nd Thursday of the month you might catch performances by Mndgsn, Crimewave 5150, Corbo, Lojii, Swarvy, Pink Siifu, Mu., Free the Robots and many more. Dirty Merlin's love for the underground culture is not just with music, he also is one of the founders of OC zine fest. Benson has shown genuine love for the underground culture and supports in so many ways. If your in LA, Long Beach, OC area you probably will see him at one of the shows performing or hangin out.

OBEY Records Ep 2: King Khan

Arish Ahmad Khan aka King Khan was a member of a number of Canadian garage bands including the Spaceshits, a frantic garage punk outfit formed in mid-1995. As his circle of fellow trouble-maker musicians grew, in 1999 he helped create a "death cult" of such musicians, originally known as the "Kukamongas" with identifying tattoos and with plans including "Jonestown, without the killing and Kool-Aid". He used the Blacksnake moniker while in the Spaceshits whose two full-length albums were released on Sympathy for the Record Industry. He has spent a considerable amount of time in collaboration with former Spaceshits bandmate Mark Sultan in the two-man band, The King Khan & BBQ Show. Since 1999 King Khan has performed as part of King Khan and the Shrines, a psychedelic soul nine member band.

OBEY Records Ep 1: Kutmah

Justin 'Kutmah' Mcnulty was born in Brighton, England to an Egyptian mother and Scottish father. Moving to the United States when he was twelve years old, Kutmah grew up in Hollywood, California and ultimately made a name for himself as a talented underground artist & DJ. Intrinsic member of eclectic Los Angeles-based music collective 'Dublab', in 2004 Kutmah launched the seminal club 'Sketchbook', which forged fundamental foots of the now-infamous LA beat scene. In Spring 2010 without advance warning nor any provoking criminal activity, armed US Federal agents entered Kutmah's home, incarcerated him for two months at a New Mexico detention center under immigration charges, and ultimately deported him to the UK where he currently resides. Since then Kutmah has toured Europe, playing shows with Saul Williams, The Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus, Gonjasufi, Dabrye and others.
